Below the Floor

Beneath the floor of a family’s home there exists a secret world – unseen by human eyes. The Wan Taus, a peaceful tribe of little kobolds half the size of a pencil, occasionally visit the humans in search for things they could use. Like old cooking pots and broken toys, out of which they build their little village – below the floor.

When a clan of reptiles threatens the village, Leto, a Wan Tau child, must conquer his fears and search for a mighty warrior who would help them to protect their home.

Ever since I can remember I always wanted to get into those places I could never reach. Do you really know what lives in sewers? Did you ever wonder what tiny kobold warriors would look like? Welcome to the world of Below the Floor, my illustrated fairytale book. It is a story about helpfulness, courage and solidarity.

The Creation of the Book

As I spend a lot of time in front of a computer during my daytime job as an animation artist, I decided to create all of the illustrations for the book by hand. Just some pens, water colours and my trusted sketchbooks. No computer short cuts, no Photoshop – just good old paper.

Some of the notes and sketches I did while I was lining out the story.

Now, the story is 13,000 words long and has 50 coloured illustrations. I try to resist the temptation of uploading too many of the illustrations, as I do not want to spoil the surprise. But below you can see some of the characters that appear in this tale. 🙂
