Deep under the Surface

In one of the shots for the animated science fiction short film Echoes I wanted a small, narrow chamber trough which Susan, the heroine, walks trough.

The first designs were very much influenced by Tsutomu Nihei as you can see in the picture below.

As you can see, the chamber – even at this early stage – was not as narrow as I had it initially in mind, but I liked it being not that claustrophobic.

I wanted to work with lights to create an eery mood. But instead of doing a lot of detailed drawings and mood boards, I wanted to try out something diffent this time. I wanted to design the chamber directly in 3 D. Below you can see a yet unfinished WIP rendering of this chamber. Note, that there are no colours yet and the lights are temporary as well. But I think, that you can get a good idea of what is in the oven.
